CONCEPT NOTE

‘TAGGING’ – AN UNHEARD ‘STORY’ OR A NEW AGE PHILOSOPHY?

Is there anything such as a ‘Tag’ philosophy? Most of us are aware that actually there is no such philosophical conceptualization.

However, there profusely pervades (and perhaps has always pervaded primordially) a kind of mindset and attitude amongst people in societies to consciously or unconsciously assess, judge and evaluate others and in fact everything around them, all the time incessantly. As a result, they end up appraising things and people, in the way of ‘Tagging’ or labeling or quantifying them on the basis of varied, and so called ‘outward parameters’ which are completely subjective, culturally embedded and at most times completely irrelevant and unfair.

Etymologically a conventional tag both quantitatively and qualitatively appraises consumer products. Likewise this set of works explores and addresses the psychology and processes of ‘Tagging’ and, ‘Tags’ as a mark, an identity, an association/ connection, a cause, a reason and much more in a similar tenor.

As mentioned, putting a tag is prevalent everywhere in the society and even as an artist I’ve experienced the ‘Tag’ dealing. Though I do not and will never be pleased with the invasion of this culture all around us, I am unwillingly and hesitatingly compelled to live with it.

To my mind, my works are intricate portraits of this society, wherein I strive to delve into and render both the exterior appearances and interior psychological facets that comprise these complex portraits. My work as a consequence revolves around the portrayal of the domestic, political, national, global and general projection of our society. It is not meant to show the tangible existence of one’s bodies but, to demonstrate and be evidence of the existence of one’s mind.

My works represent the psychosomatic mirroring of individuals and people who in several situations are obligated to confront their inner selves or conscience and/or brazen out their unanswered and unresolved fumbling queries. I have chosen to place and present my objects inside a familiar, marked space and am concurrently inquiring: Does any one dare to or want to pick it up?

The objects that I have consciously preferred and rendered show that there always is a right tool available for us; we just have to choose it for a very right reason. Each object carries a tagged meaning with some oblique association or connection with the surroundings and although I have used them in a random manner, I wish that the viewer takes up the responsibility of elucidatingly ‘tag’ it.

I have also shown the inner shadows and the shadows around us. We are surrounded by reasons, but we see things with a ‘tagged vision’ which is not helpful. I am well aware of the hypocrisy prevalent in society and my works are all about the existence of this hybridism in the human society, however with no clue of the conclusion.

At the end, I would like to tag my works with what Friedrich Nietzsche said: "My dear friend, what is this, our life? A boat that swims in the sea, and all one knows for certain about it, is that one day it will capsize. Here we are, two good old boats that have been faithful neighbors, and above all your hand has done its best to keep me from "capsizing"! Let us then continue our voyage—each for the other's sake, for a long time yet, a long time! We should miss each other so much! Tolerably calm seas and good winds and above all sun—what I wish for myself, I wish for you, too, and am sorry that my gratitude can find expression only in such a wish and has no influence at all on wind or weather!"

So is ‘Tagging’ a story that has never been narrated or a new age philosophy? It certainly is the unheard story for me and I am not done yet. There is still a long way to go.
