Artist Prasoon Poddar - Ardizen | Artist Portfolio

I am an artist and a sensitive part of this social circus we are living in. I am not only concerned what happening inside my adobe walls but also about the outside drama taking place in my presence and absence as well. Each day hundreds of unwanted and never readable bills posters and promises grew on every possible clean wall like some terrible fungus infecting a healthy man. Each day every lonely roadside wall got humiliated with showers of unwanted piss and spits. Each day I see all this and feel certain unfold suffocation inside me and in response to this social disease I speak through my paintings and sculptures, giving the spotlight to the culprit. I use my art as a tool for social commentary. Art has often served as social commentary. Images related to social commentary attempt to convince us toward particular viewpoints
or actions promoted by public or private institutions such as political parties, governments or religious groups. The same thing or work, I am doing through my works as the visual images has been frequently been used to convince masses of people to accept beliefs, take
action or follow leaders.

CONCEPT NOTE

ABOUT MY WORK

You can easily spot him with different color, religion and region. The wall is an endless urinal for him, he spits litters and pollutes. He is no one special but the very special man of our country India. Every time we see him we suddenly turns our back on him but…..I don’t.

This appearance of temple with the bells and its visual appearance along with the auspicious sound left me in a curious state of mind to know the secret behind the hanging bells. Out of my curiosity I searched for the reason of the thousand bells hanged then I came to know whenever the wishes of a devoted gets fulfilled they show their gratitude to the god by hanging a bells in the temple. It was very strange and amazing for me to know that there are elements in between god and his devotee to discover the relationship of faith. Where as in the world of haste life hardly anyone gets time to thank him. I think my works mainly discuss (or show) the issues related with the public places, specially the “public walls” and how these walls are treated by the public. Actually my body of work is the mirror of society’s unwanted face. A face with which we never want to be face to face. My work brings the offender in front of a viewer and also questions about the slow and gradual acceptance of the culprit, who is terrorizing the environment every passing second. My pictorial representation is not easy to digest at once, very much like the truth and in times of subjective gimmickry and false juxtaposition of senseless, I will continue to paint the truth. Soiled paper currency. People very often write on the bank notes. It can be a phone number or their religious leanings as Hare Ram or Jai Bhole or the train number is travelling in. They scribble or doddle on the currency notes. They do not have the awareness that they are damaging a government property. I have collected many such notes and would like to weave my paintings around these images.

A rumor takes attention about rejection of soiled currency notes by banks, in reality RBI had declared a clean note policy way back in 1999 considering crores of currency notes being damaged and disrespected. Although it has been clarified by the RBI that banks are not allowed to reject currency with marks, this is still a point of introspection. Why should one write on currency notes anyways?
I Prasoon Poddar is exploring this question trying to bring focus to this carelessness and disrespect to a nation’s property. Will stamping gods names increase the value of the note, will writing “I love you” make your love noteworthy? A very ordinary but sensitive observation has taken shape in the series of these paintings illustrating expressions on currency notes through a subtle hint of sarcasm. Collected over two years
are these soiled currency notes which have become a reflection of the attitude of our society.

ABOUT NEW SERIES
We all love that window seat. Don't we. The idea of looking past images at a travelling speed gives us the thrill of a live movie running past by. While travelling in a flight the feeling is a tad different. It’s not the speed but the scale that is completely boggling. While I travel through my flight journeys I see the world down like the birds. The traffic looks like a molten volcano, the houses look like a computer assembled PC Board. All things generally larger than life fit into a new micro vision. As if we are watching a computer open with a microscope. Only that here my microscope is the airplane window. This series is a collection of this micro-macro shift in perspective portrayed in mixed
mediums of papermache lost and found objects and high texture paint hand assembled.
